Toy Fox Terriers O'BJ

O'BJ Strike A Match Phoenix, aka Zippo was our second of three Foundation bitches. When we found Zippo, we bought her on the spot! A daughter of one of the all time top UKC sires, Ch. Bobby McGee, who was himself the son of the All Time #1 UKC dam Precious Contender. Zippo was old Wilken's lines on her bottom side and when we went to see her at 5 months, we couldn't believe our good fortune. That she was a 3/4 sister to Zona was even better. |

But
how to breed her "out" a little without diminishing what she was? Her mate
had to have the same solid bone, substance, big terrier teeth and perfect mouth.
Zippo had taken a bad fall onto our ceramic tile floor and injured her leg so we
couldn't show her but we wanted to give her the best AKC show pedigree for this
litter.
In 2004, found the answer and out-crossed O'BJ Zippo (left) to Ch. Moonlight's Magic Mozart (right) a multi-Group placing, nationally top-ranked dog. We had been watching "Mojo", admiring his sound movement, short back, solid bone, clean head, etc. At a Regional Specialty weekend (a clean sweep for Hugely) we asked to see his mouth. It was the only thing we had left to consider as we intended to "set" Zippo's perfect, full terrier-mouth which was so lacking in the breed. His bite was perfect, with big strong terrier-teeth. So we made arrangements, drove to Tennessee in a terrible storm, made one breeding and headed back to NC.
Ch. LollyPop O'BJ and Lucky Dog O'BJ are littermates from that litter born January 2005. By then Bill's health was failing and going to shows was iffy so we sold Lolly on co-ownership to a first-time Toy Fox Terrier fancier and she quickly became Ch. Lollipop O'BJ, all novice-owner handled.
LollyPop
finished her AKC championship easily, with Best Of
Breed wins over Champions. Diane then bought a show male from me to breed with
Lolly. I sold her the Garbo son I was keeping. Mostly Handsome O'BJ.
He needed only a major to finish when he was bred to Ch. Lolly; Diane's cancer
returned with a vengeance, and then Mostly suffered a tragic death at Diane's.
I took three of the litter of six puppies when Diane could no longer cope. One became Ch. Boo, (below left) co-owned with Linn Vandiver. LollyPup is major pointed, co-owned with Linda Witouski and the male is nearly finished.
After two wonderful litters, Ch. LollyPop was retired to a loving pet home where she is a full time lap dog!
DB Trick R Treat O'BJ finished undefeated from the puppy class, winning over several really nice Champions and of course, going BW over the class dogs. "Boo" did it all, owner-handled by Linn Vandiver.
Lolly-Pup O'BJ went to a show home on co-ownership with an AKC judge who has finally gotten her adjusted to the upheavals in her young life. She is major pointed, gorgeous, sound, and well on the way to her Ch. title.
I wanted to keep the boy from Lolly and Mostly but he had the good fortune to be stolen right out of my arms by Marilee Thorsby and is close to his title.
We kept Ch. Lolly's litter brother, Lucky Dog O'BJ (below left) but due to my husband's cancer, he was never shown. He sired four litters from which I've kept or co-owned four of his puppies. Like Lolly, he produced extremely well. VG, one of his Ch. Garbo daughters is currently major pointed and will be bred to Hugely in 2009.
I
sold Lucky Dog so he could be shown to his Ch. title and have more siring
opportunities. The new owner lost his elderly mother, had to give up his
dogs and move. Fortunately, Marilee Thorsby rescued Lucky, proving he is
indeed, one Lucky Dog! We hope she can get him back in condition and show
him to his championship but at least he's got a great home now and I'll be able
to breed a Hugely daughter to him. Lucky me, Lucky Dog.
Someone asked me just the other day, why I let Lucky Dog go at all. Well, he had three problems. He was in a very small breeding program, he produced so well that I kept several of his offspring, and I had nothing else to breed him to.
He has a sweet, easy going personality, got along great with Hugely and unlike Hugely, he loved being covered up by puppies, tolerating their needle-sharp teeth, loving and teaching them.
He's a little con man and never met a bitch he couldn't reach despite his small size! Like Lolly, he has a good bite and those strong terrier-teeth which was one of the virtues we hoped to set when we we bred Zippo to Mojo.
He has produced the great mouth and also produces his all-white body with an especially good tight-fitting, smooth, velvety coat. He also produces his short back, cobby body, low set hocks, high set tail and good angles.
Lucky
Dog is the epitome of the short-back, up-on-leg, Smooth Fox Terrier profile and
we are grateful for the wonderful litters he gave us. And no, that's not the
same photo of Lucky, although both were taken on the same day. I like both
photos because he so consistently shows the correct male Toy Fox Terrier
Proportion.
(I kept the only puppy in Garbo's litter by Lucky Dog. VG (Varsity Girl O'BJ) is pointed from puppy class and will be pictured on Garbo's page.)
Lucky Dog fit perfectly into our breeding program, helping to avoid the dumpy, short-legged or long backed (take your pick) faults so common in the breed today. By the way, see history and understand that length of back is the "drag of the breed", i.e. the Chihuahua structure instead of the Smooth Fox Terrier make and shape. We hope he does as well for other breeders.
I bred Ch. Lolly to Ch. Hugely and kept her daughter, Xtra Sweet O'BJ. Sweetie she got me back into the ring in March 2009, picking up her first major from puppy class. She and VG were head to head and they each need only a major to finish. "Sweetie" will then be bred to Speed Bump (Lucky Dog x Ch. Getta Blaze O'BJ) to bring out the best from Hugely, Jane, and the old Phoenix lines.
