Zippo & Mojo = Lolly & Lucky = O'BJ Toy Fox Terriers!
|
O'BJ Strike A Match Phoenix, aka Zippo was our second of three Foundation bitches. Jane was a lucky fluke but by then we knew exactly what we needed to found the Toy Fox Terriers O'BJ bloodline and when we found Zippo, we bought her on the spot! A daughter of a top UKC sire, Bobby McGee, who was himself the son of the All Time #1 UKC dam Precious Contender, Zippo was old Wilken's lines on her bottom side and when we found her at 5 months, we couldn't believe our good fortune. |

But
how to breed her "out" a little without losing what she was? Her mate had
to have the same bone, substance, big terrier teeth and perfect mouth.
Zippo had taken a bad fall onto our ceramic tile floor and injured her back leg
so we couldn't show her but we wanted to give her the best AKC show pedigree for
this litter.
In 2004, we out-crossed O'BJ Zippo to Ch. Moonlight's Magic Mozart (right) a multi-Group, a nationally top-ranked dog I had been watching. Sound, short backed, great movement and yes, that terrier-mouth so lacking in the breed. So we made arrangements, drove to Tennessee in a terrible storm, and made the breeding.
Ch. LollyPop O'BJ and Lucky Dog O'BJ are littermates from that litter born January 2005. By then our ability to show was in doubt so we sold Lolly on co-ownership to a first-time Toy Fox Terrier fancier and she quickly became Ch. Lollipop O''BJ, all novice-owner handled.
Lolly
finished her AKC championship in a flash. Diane had a lot of
fun with her and came back to me to buy a show male that would be compatible to
breed with Lolly. Regrettably, I sold her the Garbo male I was keeping.
Mostly Handsome is another story but suffice to say, when Diane's cancer came
back, Lolly and her show puppies from the litter by almost-champion Mostly came
back to me.
Which is why I have no decent photo of Lolly. She finished as a gangly puppy - with Best Of Breed wins over Champions, novice-owner handled. Lolly was still thin from her litter when Diane flew down to bring her back to me and well, time went by as Diane and I struggled with her health problem and then Mostly's tragic death.
It seemed like no time and Lolly was back in season so I bred her to Hugely and she's due mid-June. I'll try to get current photos before she is too pregnant to photo.

In
the meantime, these two daughters by
Mostly
Handsome O'BJ speak for Lolly. Unexpectedly over my self-imposed limit, I
had to sell the puppies to make room to keep Lolly but I kept co-own on
both of them.
DB Trick R Treat O'BJ finished undefeated from the puppy class, defeating several really nice Champions and of course, going BW over the class dogs. "Boo" was owner-handled by co-owner Linn.
I let the other girl, Lolly-Pup O'BJ go on co-own to a great show home a month ago. She's with an AKC judge and will now have her opportunity to go to shows and have fun.
And then the boy from Lolly and Mostly
had
the good fortune to be stolen right out of my arms by another Toy Fox Terrier
breeder! So he too will have his opportunity in the show ring. Mr.
Big Shot O'BJ is pictured on the right at about five months.
We kept Lolly's litter brother, Lucky Dog O'BJ (below left) but due to my husband's cancer, he was never shown. I recently sold him to a great show home and he will have his Ch. title and more siring opportunities with his new owner.
He sired four litters from which
I've kept four puppies. Like Lolly, he produced strongly for us which is
why I bred him to our two best
Jane daughters, Ch. Blaze and Ch. Garbo before letting him go to be shown.
Someone asked me just the other day, why I let Lucky Dog go at all. Well, he had three problems. He was in a very small breeding program, he produced so well that I kept several of his offspring, and I had nothing more to breed him to.
He has a sweet, easy going personality (like his nephew Lil Boy). He got along with Hugely and like Lil Boy, put up with being covered up by puppies. All the babies adored him and unlike Hugely, he enjoyed playing with and teaching the puppies.
He's a little con man with the girls and never met a bitch
he couldn't reach despite his small size! His
bite is good and like Lolly, he has the strong terrier-teeth which was one of
the many compatible virtues we hoped to set when we we bred Zippo to Mojo. It
seems we accomplished that and it is coming through in litters from both Lucky
Dog and his sister Lolly.

Lucky also produces his all-white body with an especially good tight-fitting, smooth, velvety coat. He has consistently produced his short back, cobby body, low set hocks, high set tail and good angles.
He is the epitome of the short-back, up-on-leg, Smooth Fox Terrier profile and we are grateful for the wonderful litters he gave us, including the current litter out of Blaze. And no, that's not the same photo of Lucky, although both were taken on the same day. I like them because they so clearly show the correct Toy Fox Terrier Proportion.
(I kept the only puppy in Garbo's litter by Lucky Dog. Varsity Girl will be pictured on Garbo's page.)
Lucky Dog fit perfectly into our breeding program, helping to avoid the dumpy, short-legged or long backed (take your pick) faults so common in the breed today. By the way, see history and understand that length of back is the "drag of the breed", i.e. the Chihuahua structure instead of the Smooth Fox Terrier make and shape.
